Every time you drop your vehicle off at Weld County Garage — any make or model — it’s in the hands of a technician who takes tons of training to get better at exactly that job. Our technicians are always leveling up, but we’ve had more accomplishments than ever over the last few months: ten members of our service team earned or leveled up their General Motors technician certifications — everything from a first Silver Certification to the elite World Class Technician title that fewer than 1% of GM technicians ever reach.

We sat down with each of them to talk about what the certification took, what it means to them, and a little bit about who they are outside the shop. Here’s the crew that’s keeping Northern Colorado’s GMs running right.

Quick Answer

Weld County Garage GMC now has 4 World Class Technicians, 1 Master Technician, 4 Gold-Certified/Gold Technicians, and 5 Silver-Certified technicians on staff.

GM’s certification ladder runs Silver → Gold → Master → World Class, with World Class requiring Master-level certification in at least 8 of GM’s 12 technician specialty categories.

The Top of the Ladder

World Class Technicians

World Class is the top of GM’s certification ladder. To get there, a technician has to earn Master-level certification in at least 8 of GM’s 12 specialty categories — engines, drivetrain, automatic transmission, electrical, and more. It’s a career-spanning achievement. Weld County Garage GMC has four World Class Technicians on staff, and the two below just reached that milestone.

Steve Rohn, World Class Technician at Weld County Garage GMC

Steve Rohn — World Class Technician

Steve has been a technician for 23 years, starting his GM career back in June 2003. When he’s not in the shop, Steve runs the pumpkin farm he took over from his father in 2019, raises and sells cattle, and has spent the last 19 years as a Boy Scout leader in the Eaton/Ault area.

Between the farm, the cattle, and Scouts, Steve’s proof that “World Class” doesn’t stop at the service bay door.

David Roman, World Class Technician at Weld County Garage GMC

David Roman — World Class Technician

David has been with Weld County Garage for seven years and completed his eighth and final World Class assessment this past June. Born in Greeley, he grew up between Mexico and Texas before moving back to Colorado, where he got his start working with his cousin, who owns his own shop, before formalizing his training at Aims Community College. He likes taking on big repairs — the kind he can work on nonstop rather than bouncing between smaller jobs — and he’s especially proud of sticking with the assessments once they started feeling real. Outside the shop, he’s into learning new things and meeting new people, and he just picked up his dream truck: a 1994 Ford Lightning.

“I like the support that I get from my coworkers and my friends here. Everyone gets together and if you need help everyone is willing to help.”

Master Technician

Weld County Garage GMC has one Master Technician on staff, and that’s Thomas.

Thomas Christen, Master Technician at Weld County Garage GMC

Thomas Christen — Master Technician

Thomas has been an automotive technician for a decade and joined Weld County Garage about two and a half years ago. Earning Master status took hundreds of hours of training — he’ll be the first to say it wasn’t easy, but it was really about building a genuine understanding of the systems, not just checking a box. Originally from Fort Collins, Thomas has been hands-on since middle school and, true to form, isn’t one to sit still for a desk job. His dream car is a 1968 Pontiac GTO.

“You have to be investigative to diagnose a vehicle’s problem. It takes understanding the system, but it also takes the time to actually go through and figure out what exactly is happening.”

Building Toward World Class

Gold-Certified Technicians

Weld County Garage GMC has four Gold-Certified technicians on staff, and the three profiled here are its newest additions to that group.

Loren Rodman, Gold Certified Technician at Weld County Garage GMC

Loren Rodman — Gold Certified Technician

Loren is one of the most experienced hands on the team, with over 30 years as a technician and a career with GM dating back to 2003. Outside the shop, Loren’s usually tent camping with his four grandkids or out at the drag strip, where he and his son used to race at Bandimere Speedway.

Married 25 years, with a son who’s an over-the-road truck driver and a daughter, Amber, who worked in WCG’s parts department before moving into the medical field.

Trevor Kurtz, GM Gold Certified Automotive Technician at Weld County Garage GMC

Trevor Kurtz — GM Gold Certified Automotive Technician

Trevor has been with Weld County Garage for seven and a half years, since April 1, 2019 — a start date he admits he thought was a joke at first. Before the dealership he managed a carwash and stocked shelves at a pet store. Getting Gold Certified didn’t change what he works on day to day; for him it’s a step toward eventually reaching World Class. He grew up loving diesels — especially the 6.6L Duramax — after spending time in the garage with his dad from around age four, and he played hockey for 14 years. His current daily is a 2020 GMC Sierra 1500, and he’s slowly restoring his dad’s (and before that, his grandfather’s) 1969 GMC Sierra Grande.

“I’m pretty much an open book. If someone asks me a question, they’ll know it — there’s not much else to know about me, since it’s already all out there.”

Julian Hernandez, Gold Technician at Weld County Garage GMC

Julian Hernandez — Mainline Technician, Gold Technician

Julian has four years of experience as a technician and joined Weld County Garage four months ago after working independently on cars. Getting Gold took after-hours training on his own time, and while he’s still working on the same kinds of vehicles day to day, he calls it a huge stepping stone. Born and raised in Greeley, Julian’s been drawn to cars since he was a kid — these days he splits his free time between fishing and making his own cars go faster. His current vehicle is a Charger that he’s done tons of upgrades to.

Where Every Great Tech Starts

Silver-Certified Technicians

Five of our technicians currently hold Silver Certification, and the four below are the latest to add it to their resume.

David Dexter, Silver Certified Service Technician at Weld County Garage GMC

David Dexter — Service Technician (Installs), Silver Certified

David has seven years of experience as a technician, six of them with the Yoder Family of Companies after transferring over from Truck City. Before automotive work, he was a construction worker. To him, the certification is about learning and getting better, plain and simple — and he’s proud of “achieving greatness,” his words for putting in the work. Born in Louisiana and raised in Thornton, David got his start in automotive at Discount Tire at age 15. He’s a Duramax guy through and through, and outside the shop he’s into extreme sports like motocross and racing. He and his wife, Tristan, have four kids, two dogs, two cats, and a lizard at home.

“There’s no I in Team.”

Brant Huber, Silver Certified Apprentice Technician at Weld County Garage GMC

Brant Huber — Apprentice Technician, Silver Certified (Steering & Suspension)

Brant has been with Weld County Garage for a year and eight months, moving up from lube technician. His Silver Certification in Steering & Suspension took about 15 hours of training and reflects the expertise he’s built in suspension systems and alignments. He’s originally from North Dakota and grew up in nearby Kersey. His grandfather was a Chevy mechanic his whole life, and that influence stuck — Brant got his first car, couldn’t afford dealership repairs, and had to learn to fix it himself. Outside of work, he’s into older BMWs (he owns four of them), sport bikes, and MotoGP.

“I really like the team, especially my mentor Steve — he’s a great person to work with, very thoughtful and good at his job. Management has been great too. Overall, I think the team is fantastic.”

Samuel Lopez, Silver Certified apprentice technician at Weld County Garage GMC

Samuel Lopez — Apprentice (Warranty Work), Silver Certified

Samuel will hit one year at Weld County Garage this September and has been an apprentice for the last few weeks, after coming over from a Chevy dealership, where he specialized in transmissions and Corvettes under mentor Danny Bennett. He’s been a technician since he was 19 and knew even younger — as a kid, he was already pulling the tires off his Hot Wheels to see what needed fixing. He’s most proud of starting so young and staying in dealerships ever since. Off the clock, he’s lifting weights, reading, doing extra GM training, and fishing. He’s a diesel guy at heart, with a 1-owner Duramax as his dream vehicle.

“The team that I have, the support that comes behind it — we’re all here for each other, and we teach each other how to be better. It’s really the support, the foundation, and it’s family based.”

Marco Orozco, Silver Certified Service Technician at Weld County Garage GMC

Marco Orozco — Service Technician, Silver Certified

Marco has eight years of experience as a technician and joined Weld County Garage six months ago after working in shops for six or seven years. He’s especially proud to see his name and certification posted up on the ceiling for everyone to see. Born and raised in Greeley, Marco got into cars in high school with some buddies, and it turned into a lasting hobby. He’ll work on whatever comes his way, though he admits he likes it when an ambulance rolls in.

“The environment is really nice.”
