When Lee Yoder and two other partners purchased Weld County Garage in 1982, they knew they weren’t just buying a business. The Garage was — and is — more than that. Tracing its roots back to 1901, Weld County Garage has built a reputation for value, fairness, and giving back to the community. Because of its commitment to its customers, its employees, and its tireless acts of service to others, the Garage is a valued part of Greeley, Colorado, and the surrounding area.

Weld County Garage, Inc. was established by D.R. McArthur in 1901 as a business selling buggies and providing horseshoeing services for the dirt roads of Greeley, Colorado. In 1908, the Garage entered the automobile industry and became the first dealership west of the Mississippi, offering the popular Model 10. On September 16, 1908, General Motors (GM), a holding company for , was founded, and the Weld County Automobile Company became a GM dealer on that same date. Alongside s, the dealership also sold Cadillac models, although the end date of their Cadillac sales is unknown. In 1908, GM acquired the Reliance Motor Truck Company and the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company, which were merged to create GMC Trucks in 1912. Consequently, Weld County Automobile Company also ventured into the truck business. In 1914, the company changed its name back to the original Weld County Garage, Inc. In 1926, when Pontiac was introduced to the GM brand lineup, the Garage began selling Pontiac models.

Changing Times, Changing Needs

Weld County Garage, Inc. has a wide history beyond the car business, as The Garage used its prominent setting in the community to provide access to modern conveniences for the home. Initially, the large showroom on 8th Avenue and 10th Street in Greeley, Colorado, not only housed , Pontiac, and GMC sales but also sold appliances. As time passed, this showroom transformed into a spacious indoor facility exclusively for and Pontiac vehicles, providing the Garage with a comfortable environment to browse cars during harsh Colorado winters.

Over the years, Weld County Garage, Inc. expanded its offerings in transportation and entertainment. The Garage ventured into selling trailers, boats, jet skis, four-wheelers, and motorcycles. The building on 8th and 10th underwent multiple remodeling and expansion projects to accommodate the Garage’s service department, collision center, and detail shop. Interestingly, the building also featured two large apartments on the upper floor. One of these apartments served as the residence of Gene Bush, an esteemed employee of Weld County Garage, Inc., who dedicated more than 50 years to the company.

In June of 2003, Weld County Garage, Inc. relocated to its new address at 2699 47th Avenue in Greeley. This spacious location spans over 12 acres and boasts a 60,000-square-foot building. At this new site, Weld County Garage, Inc. proudly offers two large service departments – one situated on 47th Avenue and another known as the Truck City Service Center, which can be found at 1415 1st Ave in Greeley. The Truck City Service Center is equipped to service all makes and models, including medium-duty and recreational vehicles.

Furthermore, the Garage’s new location showcases a vast parts warehouse, a detail shop, administrative offices, a large multimedia and meeting room, vehicle financing offices, and one of the largest used vehicle departments in the state of Colorado. It is also the official dealership for GMC sales. Despite the 2009 discontinuation of the Pontiac brand name and extensive restructuring within GM, Weld County Garage, Inc. remained a stalwart business leader in the community and even celebrated its 100th anniversary.

New Ownership, Same Core Values

In 1982, Lee Yoder and two other partners acquired Weld County Garage, Inc. from the third generation of the McArthur family. Lee Yoder’s son, Warren Yoder, started working in various departments at the dealership and eventually rose to the position of General Manager of the Garage. In 2012, Warren Yoder bought the company and currently owns all Weld County Garage, Inc. locations.
