Why You Don’t Need Certified Pre-Owned at WCG

Here is something you will never see on a Weld County Garage window sticker: a Certified Pre-Owned badge. Not because we cut corners — the opposite. We decided years ago that the CPO program, especially the way manufacturers price it, mostly adds cost to a used car, not confidence. In this post I will walk you through what CPO actually is, the one real thing it gives you, and how our 172-point inspection, free Carfax, in-house reconditioning and service department deliver the same peace of mind — without asking you to pay for a sticker.

Quick Answer

Weld County Garage sells no Certified Pre-Owned vehicles on purpose.

CPO is a manufacturer program that adds a badge, an extended warranty and a price premium. WCG gives equal or better confidence without the markup: a 172-point MPVI inspection, free Carfax, in-house reconditioning, our service department, “No Bills for the Basics,” a 3-Day Money-Back Guarantee, and optional service contracts.

Start Here

What Is a Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle, Really?

A Certified Pre-Owned vehicle is a used car that the manufacturer — GM, for example, with its GMC and Chevrolet certification — allows a franchised dealer to badge under a factory program. To qualify, the vehicle usually has to be under a certain age and mileage, pass a manufacturer inspection, get reconditioned to a standard, and come with a factory-backed extended limited warranty. That is the honest definition.

Here is the part the badge does not advertise: CPO is a manufacturer marketing program first. The dealer pays GM a certification fee per vehicle, the dealer carries the cost of the extended warranty, and both of those costs get baked into the price you see. So the same exact truck — same year, same miles, same condition — will usually carry a higher sticker when it wears a CPO badge than when it does not. You are paying for the program, not just the car.

None of that makes CPO a scam. The inspection and the warranty are real. The question is whether the premium is worth it — and for most buyers, once you see what a thorough dealer already does for free, the answer is no.

The Honest Case

Why GM Certification Mostly Adds Cost, Not Value

Strip a CPO offer down to its parts and you are really paying for three things: an inspection, reconditioning, and an extended warranty. Two of those three are things a serious used-car operation already does as a matter of course. The inspection? Every used vehicle on our lot already gets a 172-point MPVI. Reconditioning? We do it in-house before a car is ever listed. So with GM certification, a big chunk of the premium is paying a second time for work that a good dealer has already done.

There are other quiet costs, too. CPO programs limit which vehicles can even be certified — usually only late-model, low-mileage units of the manufacturer’s own brand. That means a CPO-only mindset narrows your choices and steers you toward the most expensive used cars on any lot. Our used inventory runs all makes, from around $7,000 to nearly $90,000, because we think the right car for you should not be limited to what a badge program allows.

Being Fair

The One Thing CPO Does Offer — and How to Get It Cheaper

I want to be straight with you, because a one-sided pitch is not worth your trust. There is one genuine thing a CPO program gives you that a standard used car does not: a factory-backed extended warranty, administered by the manufacturer and honored at any of its franchised dealers nationwide. If cross-country, manufacturer-administered coverage is the single most important thing to you, that is a real benefit, and I will not pretend it is nothing.

Here is the counter. You do not have to buy a whole certification program to get extended coverage. You can buy a vehicle service contract (VSC) — we offer them in all types, and you can pay for one separately or roll it into your financing. A VSC lets you choose your coverage level, often handle covered repairs at many shops, and — critically — keep the lower purchase price of a non-CPO car. You add real protection without paying the certification premium on top of it.

And remember, plenty of used vehicles still carry remaining factory warranty out of the box. Between that, an optional VSC, and our own after-sale support, you can assemble coverage that fits your needs and your budget — instead of accepting a single bundled price and hoping it pencils out.

Our Alternative

How WCG Gives You CPO-Level Confidence Without the Badge

If CPO is really inspection plus reconditioning plus optional warranty plus after-sale support, then look at what every used vehicle at WCG already comes with. We did not build this to dodge certification — we built it because it is genuinely better for the buyer.

172-Point MPVI Inspection

Before any used vehicle hits our lot, it goes through a 172-point Multi-Point Vehicle Inspection covering engine and powertrain, brakes, tires and wheels, steering and suspension, electrical, HVAC, fluids, lights and safety, interior and exterior, plus a road test. That is the same kind of mechanical scrutiny a CPO inspection promises.

Free Carfax on Every Vehicle

Every used car gets a free Carfax — not AutoCheck — and you do not have to ask for it. Scan the QR code on the window sticker and the same page that shows the live, discounted price opens the full Carfax. You see the history before you ever talk to a salesperson.

In-House Reconditioning & Service Department

We recondition our used vehicles in our own shop, with a large in-house service and reconditioning department that stands behind every car after the sale. A CPO badge points to a factory program in another state; our shop is on 47th Ave in Greeley, and you can drive to it.

The WCG Promise

On qualifying vehicles, The WCG Promise adds “No Bills for the Basics” (we repair or replace defective tires, batteries, brakes and bulbs for 6 months), a free 3-Day Money-Back Guarantee, free car washes for life, a $500 welcome coupon book and more. These do not apply to as-is, budget or wholesale units — but on most used cars, they are real after-sale value a badge does not provide.

Optional Vehicle Service Contracts

Want warranty coverage like a CPO car offers? Add a vehicle service contract in the coverage level you choose, paid up front or rolled into financing — while keeping the lower price of a non-certified vehicle. You decide how much protection makes sense instead of accepting one bundled number.

Side by Side

CPO vs. The WCG Way: An Honest Comparison

Here is how the two approaches actually stack up on the things buyers care about. Notice that the only column where CPO clearly leads is the factory-administered warranty — and a VSC closes most of that gap for less.

What You Care About Certified Pre-Owned The WCG Way
Multi-point inspection Manufacturer inspection 172-point MPVI on every used car

Northern Colorado

A Service Department You Can Drive To Beats a Badge

Here is where the CPO argument really falls apart for a Northern Colorado buyer. When something needs attention after the sale, a certification badge does not turn a wrench. A service department does. Ours sits at 2699 47th Ave in Greeley, a quick run off US-34 or down I-25 from Loveland, Windsor, Fort Collins, Evans and Longmont. If a covered repair comes up, you are not shipping a car anywhere or hunting for a participating dealer — you drive to a shop run by people who have been part of this community since 1908.

That local backing matters more out here than it does in a brochure. Northern Colorado puts real demand on a vehicle — winter on the I-25 corridor, mountain grades toward Estes Park and the high country, long ag and ranch miles across Weld County. When you buy from a store with a large in-house service and reconditioning department, the people who inspected and reconditioned your car are the same people you call if a question comes up. A CPO badge cannot offer that. A neighbor can.

And because our pricing is upfront and no-haggle — what you see on the windshield is what you pay — you are never wondering whether a certification premium got slipped into the number. Even on a Sunday, when Colorado law keeps us closed, you can self-browse the locked lot at your own pace and scan any window sticker to pull the live price and the free Carfax, no salesperson required.

Frequently Asked

CPO & No-CPO Used Car Questions

▶  Does Weld County Garage sell Certified Pre-Owned vehicles?
No, and that is on purpose. WCG does not sell CPO vehicles. Instead every used car gets a 172-point MPVI inspection, a free Carfax, in-house reconditioning and the backing of our service department — CPO-level confidence without the CPO price premium.
▶  What exactly is a Certified Pre-Owned vehicle?
It is a used vehicle the manufacturer lets a franchised dealer badge under a factory program after it passes an inspection, gets reconditioned and is paired with an extended limited warranty. It is a manufacturer marketing program, and it typically adds a price premium to the same car.
▶  Why does a CPO car cost more than the same used car without the badge?
The dealer pays the manufacturer a certification fee per vehicle and carries the cost of the bundled extended warranty. Both costs get baked into the price. So you are partly paying for a factory badge and a marketing program on top of the vehicle itself.
▶  Is a CPO vehicle actually more reliable than a non-CPO used car?
Not inherently. A badge confirms a car passed a manufacturer inspection, but reliability comes from the vehicle’s condition and history, not the sticker. A thoroughly inspected, reconditioned non-CPO car with a clean Carfax can be just as dependable — usually for less money.
▶  What is the 172-point MPVI inspection?
It is the Multi-Point Vehicle Inspection every used vehicle at WCG passes before it hits the lot. It covers engine and powertrain, brakes, tires and wheels, steering and suspension, electrical, HVAC, fluids, lights and safety, interior and exterior condition, and a road test.
▶  Do I still get a free vehicle history report without CPO?
Yes. Every used vehicle comes with a free Carfax — not AutoCheck. Scan the QR code on the window sticker and the same page that shows the live, discounted price opens the full Carfax, so you can review the history before you ever talk to anyone.
▶  If CPO offers a warranty, how do I get coverage without it?
Two ways. Many used vehicles still carry remaining factory warranty, and you can add a vehicle service contract (VSC) in the coverage level you choose. A VSC can be paid up front or rolled into financing, so you add real protection while keeping a lower purchase price.
▶  What is the difference between a VSC and a CPO warranty?
A CPO warranty is bundled into a higher vehicle price and administered by the manufacturer. A VSC is an optional, separate contract you can add or skip and tailor to your needs. The big practical difference is choice: with a VSC you control the coverage and keep the car’s price lower.
▶  What is “No Bills for the Basics”?
It is part of The WCG Promise. For six months after purchase, WCG repairs or replaces defective tires, batteries, brakes and bulbs at no charge. It does not apply to as-is, budget or wholesale units, but on qualifying vehicles it covers the wear items buyers worry about most right after a used-car purchase.
▶  Can I return a used car if I change my mind?
On qualifying vehicles, The WCG Promise includes a free 3-Day Money-Back Guarantee, handled in person at our Greeley store. It is not available on as-is, budget or wholesale units, but on most used cars it lets you drive in real Northern Colorado conditions before fully committing.
▶  Does skipping CPO mean fewer vehicles to choose from?
It is the opposite. CPO programs only certify newer, low-mileage cars of the manufacturer’s own brand, which narrows your options. Our used inventory is all makes, all price ranges — from around $7,000 to nearly $90,000 — so you choose the right vehicle, not just the one a badge program allows.
▶  Where can I shop no-CPO, no-haggle used cars near Greeley?
